We're opening the doors for school groups to visit Smart Factory Expo on the afternoon of 15 November, from 13:30-16:30. School staff will need to register and complete the student group form; we will not be collecting and process data from the students.
Digital technologies are impacting every aspect of manufacturing operations – linking together people, processes and products and transforming business outcomes. This ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’ plays to the UK's strengths – with a strong position in advanced manufacturing, and a world class high technology sector.
Smart Factory Expo is where this all comes together in an exciting combination of ‘show and tell’ – with pitch clinics, exhibition floor presentations, networking events, drop-in advisory clinics, the launch of the North West Pilot of the Government’s Made Smarter Review, and the country’s largest gathering of digital manufacturing exhibitors.
This year’s exhibition is 50% bigger than 2017 – with a continued focus on the future of UK manufacturing, and the emerging technologies and skills required to support what is described variously as ‘Industry 4.0’ or the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’ (4IR). Organised by The Manufacturer magazine, we have a longstanding commitment to supporting the promotion of manufacturing as a great career option to students – through our support of the Arkwright Engineering Scholarships and industrial apprenticeships in general.
We are again putting together a programme of presentations designed for a student audience, to showcase the breadth of modern manufacturing – and the many different career paths available. These presentations will run from 13:30-15:30, and feature senior executives and manufacturing apprentices sharing details of their career choices and answering questions from students.
- Innovation Alley: Where 50+ of the UK’s hottest manufacturing tech start-ups lift the lid on the future of British manufacturing!
- Best of British Manufacturing Showcase: The Best of British Manufacturing Showcase is a celebration of domestic manufacturing, and perhaps a much-needed reminder for non-manufacturers of the country’s contribution to the man-made environment – and the wealth that the sector generates for the economy!
- Top 500 Hall of Fame: Be inspired by the personal journeys of 500 of the UK’s leading manufacturing executives.
We look forward to inspiring students to pursue a career within the UK manufacturing sector!

There are over 100 presentations during both days of Smart Factory Expo.
These are free-to-attend for all visitors and are located centrally within each Visitor Zone – providing you with a unique learning opportunity for yourself and the other members of your team.
Spaces to attend each session are limited - so make sure you get there early!
With so much going on at Smart Factory Expo – how do you make sure you are always in the right place at the right time?
Simple: our Visitor Trails are recommended itineraries for you to discover those exhibitors and presentations that share your focus.

5. Digital Manufacturing (Beginners)
6. Digital Manufacturing (Advanced)
8. Women in Manufacturing
By creating eight different pathways for visitors to access all the opportunities at Smart Factory Expo, we provide a fresh approach to mapping exhibitor capabilities (and it is a lot more fun than reading through all the listings in the show directory!)
How they work
Download the Visitor Trail pdf of your choice a month before the show – or pick up a printed copy as you enter Smart Factory Expo. There will also be signage on the show floor highlighting the different Visitor Trails.
Innovation Alley runs through the centre of the exhibition linking all the Visitor Zones together and providing a platform for the UK’s most innovative manufacturing technology start-ups.
With over 60 early-stage businesses exhibiting in Innovation Alley, this is where show visitors can forge new partnerships with companies yet to make it onto their radar – with particular focus on:
• AI • Data Analytics • IOT
• Cyber Security • Digital Manufacturing • Circular Economy
The layout of Innovation Alley lends itself to kickstarting conversation – as entrepreneurs stand in front of their presentation space, alongside one another, creating an ‘ideas market’ that is well worth an investment of your time.
Who is exhibiting?

Interested in exhibiting?
Innovation Alley features two sizes of micro booths, with two tiers of benefits – enabling the full spectrum of UK manufacturing tech companies to be represented at Smart Factory Expo. Contact Dipika Tripathi for more details.
Each year leaders, managers and apprentices are nominated for The Manufacturer’s Top 100 – a showcase for UK manufacturing’s competitive advantage: our people.
Take a step away from the companies, and uncover the motivations and successes of individual executives – and be a part of this celebration of British industrial talent.
The Best of British Manufacturing Showcase is a celebration of domestic manufacturing, and perhaps a much-needed reminder for non-manufacturers of the country’s contribution to the man-made environment – and the wealth that the sector generates for the economy.
Many of the companies featured have already been nationally recognised at The Manufacturer Manufacturing Excellence Awards – the UK’s biggest and longest-running manufacturing awards, run in partnership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
Get up close and personal to presenters sharing their passion projects with show attendees at the SAP Speakers’ Corner.
Featuring manufacturers, entrepreneurs, Industry 4.0 advocates, and the women and men who have reached the top of their profession, and who now want to send the lift down for the next generation – Speakers’ Corner is a deliberately informal presentation-and-networking space, that allows speakers and listeners to interact with one another.
With space for no more than 20 people at a time, be sure to check out the speakers on the event app – or on the signage alongside Speakers’ Corner on the show floor.
