Intro: Manufacturing People & Skills Summit

Across the country, manufacturers are struggling to fill vacancies in their workforce. This is not a new issue – manufacturing has been struggling to compete with other industries for the best talent. The issue is made increasingly important, however, by the rapidly increasing role of technology in manufacturing, which brings with it a need for different and more advanced skillsets.

Manufacturers are turning to new talent, and particularly young people, to secure the future of their workforce through both apprenticeships and graduates. The apprentice levy, however, is widely regarded as a clumsy process – and manufacturers overwhelmingly feel that an employer-led system is crucial. Further, school-leavers, at apprentice and graduate-level alike, are coming into the workforce unable to perform essential tasks – the education system is failing to equip them with the skills they need.
Some manufacturers are taking matters into their own hands. Some are setting up employer-led training centers for apprentices and new operators – either on their own or in collaboration with other employers. Others are partnering with local schools and universities to ensure that course content is as relevant as possible.

Still, the overarching issue remains that the perception of manufacturing as a career choice is limiting the industry’s access to talent. Some companies are tackling this issue head-on by engaging with schools and communities to change that perception. By getting involved early and showing children and young people what a career in manufacturing looks like, they are paving the way for the future of the industry.
