EXHIBITOR NEWS: Idhammar Systems - What is WCM and how will it impact manufacturers?

What is WCM and how will it impact manufacturers?

With the increase in clients’ demands, manufacturers are looking at new ways to improve their productivity and efficiency by implementing new and advanced systems. Focusing on enhancing the collection and measurement of data and improving the quality of the products, the implementation of a WCM System, can enable your company to remain the leader in your business. John Roberts, managing director of Idhammar Systems explains why all business should be looking at implementing it.

What is WCM?
WCM is a set of principles aimed to improve manufacturing processes and it’s based on ten main pillars: safety, cost deployment, focused improvement, autonomous activities, professional maintenance, quality, customer services and logistics, early equipment and product management, personal development and environment. This methodology, through ongoing improvements, enables businesses reaching a level of excellence of the entire production line and improve its performances.

Zero defects and zero waste
WCM operates following a ‘zero’ concept principle: zero waste, zero defects, zero breakdowns and zero inventory. With every individual and production facilities becoming more conscious of their environmental impact they have, implementing a system in your business is essential to reduce waste and move towards being more sustainable. By adapting the WCM philosophy to the products’ quality, you will be able to detect issues in the production line and send a report to the management team in order to fix it. By reducing waste of internal rejects or scraps, it will enable you to improve lead time and therefore increase customers’ satisfaction and return rates.

Going back to source
In order to perform at high standards and set the target for new companies, it is crucial for a business to detect and fix an issue in a timely manner. WCM could help the team to identify the problem and trace it back to its origin in order to formulate the best solution for it. Manufacturers like Unilever Gloucester have recently embraced the WCM principles by implementing a Maintenance Management System (MMS) that allows the business to trace the tasks performed by the teams to target inefficiencies and correct them maximising performance.

Data measurement
WCM can be found extremely beneficial with regards to data collection and analysis that can then provide a detailed report with insights on how to improve the manufacturing process and maximise results. For example, Unilever Gloucester’s collection of data so far was only recorded on paper making it difficult to keep it organised, preventing the business to report useful insights to the management team. The implementation of a software had a positive impact on the overall productivity and efficiency as they were finally able to improve data availability, to analyse the data collected and to create useful solutions.

Any business should consider implementing a WCM methodology in their production facilities as this can enhance the production processes to a recognised world standard. By embracing this methodology, you will be able to determine any critical issue that needs to be addressed, measure the data and, therefore increase the level of efficiency and productivity in your production line. In addition, it will enable your business to produce less waste hence contributing to reducing your company’s impact on the environment.
