Celebrating the Partners who make Digital Manufacturing Week so special

The Manufacturer’s Head of Marketing, Tim Coulthard, says there’s never been a more important time for the industry to come together…

Digital Manufacturing Week is about more than technology, software and industrial development. It's also a huge opportunity for all the stakeholders in UK and European manufacturing to come together at a time of both challenges and opportunities for the industry.

At the time of writing (17 October) there’s ongoing uncertainty (was there ever anything else?) about whether the UK will leave the European Union after the 31 October Brexit deadline. When Smart Factory Expo convenes thousands of manufacturers, innovators and technology providers on 13-14 November, it will be the first post-31 October industry gathering on such a scale. For that reason this is an incredible opportunity for UK industry.

It’s why we’re so pleased that Digital Manufacturing Week is supported by the biggest, most influential Partners - membership organisations, regional development bodies, government departments, thinktanks, consultancies, universities, media, and innovation centres, to name just a few. Bringing together such a comprehensive cross-section of the manufacturing industry means the hundreds of meetings, workshops, summits, talks, case studies and social events taking place in Liverpool In November offer a critical opportunity to plan how industry will move forward in the future economic and industrial landscape.

We’ve all heard the concerns of sectors like automotive, defence and pharmaceuticals, where the truly international supply chains and agile production philosophies require seamless movement of goods and resources across borders. Leaders of the major automotive brands fear that any delays created by new border arrangements (or the failure of existing ones) would cripple their operations. By the time many of those leaders arrive in Liverpool, we’ll have greater clarity either on the impact post-Brexit, or a direction of travel for a future deal. Many of them will be collaboratively discussing solutions to their biggest challenges at Manufacturing Leaders’ Summit - we can't underestimate what an opportunity that event offers for leaders to spend two days planning and strategising together.

Of course manufacturing is about so much more done an arbitrary Brexit deadline. It's about technology, skills, innovation and macro issues that are central to future economic prosperity. We’re delighted to have so many supporting partners from the organisations driving skills and talent development in the UK - the Universities of Cambridge and Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester are critical to the supply of talent needed in the industry, and having them at Digital Manufacturing Week running workshops, giving presentations and taking part in discussions is a great chance for the industry to understand the people who’ll be the next generation of leaders.

Digital Manufacturing Week is the industry's opportunity to show the world that UK manufacturing is in good health, is a dynamic, forward-looking industry, and that we are open for business with the world. If you haven't already signed up to any of the hundreds of events happening during the week, make sure you do and are part of the conversations that are driving industrial innovation. We’ll see you there!
